Apple Press
To find out the background behind ApplePress please read the blog post here
Aim

When
By apple havest time this autumn 2009
What's Needed
- A local school or space to keep a large community apple press on it's grounds
Fundraise to buy an apple press (or make one) Spoke to owner of Cheers and he recommended hiring one for a few weeks, and a masher machine - total hire cost was very low.
- Set up a databank/map of local apple trees that are not currently utilsed
- Volunteers to
- Identify local usused apples trees
- Collect apples
- Press apples
- Run sessions with school children and local community about how apples grow and apple juice is made
- Produce guides/workshops for cider making
- Work out how to distrubute juice
- for the school
- for the owners of donated apples
- Website
- Google maps mashup with ability to GPS map potential apple trees
- Leaflets to promote scheme to local people and schools
Scalability
- A set of templates/resources on this wiki so that the project can be replicated by anyone in different locations
- Linking into other local food schemes
Get Involved
Add your name and how you can help to the get involved page. Will need to work out a list of possible locations and at some point maybe have separate pages for schemes in different areas. I'm hoping to start in South London but anyone can try the project where they live.
Local Councils
Just a thought, but maybe local councils should provide an apple press as part of their recycling facilities?

Hi!
I am part of a similar group in Manchester called Abundance. We harvest surplus apples and distribute it to community groups that need it. We also ran juicing workshops in last year, and also made crumbles to distribute.
We harvest apples from people’s gardens who contact us every saturday and also grow veg to distribute on our plot on sundays.
Our website, which has more details, is;

There are is also a similar group in Sheffield and new groups sprouting up all over the country.
This year we will be getting our own juicer and doing more workshops - already have a cider making session lined up!

Thanks for your comment Agnes. Really good to see what you are up to in Manchester and really inspiring to see that it is all possible.
I'm checking out the website now, hoping to borrow some of your ideas. :)
Best of luck with this year's harvest.

Hi, I've just been researching community fruit presses, hence found your link. Have discovered quite a few. Liked your ideas very much and wondered how they went.
